Project Description
2205 1.4462 Duplex Stainless Steel Pipe For Oilfield
1.4462 UNS S31803 also referred to as 2205 Duplex or 22Cr, is a cold hardened duplex stainless steel intended for corrosion resistance in sweet (CO2) and mildly sour (H2S) environments with moderate chloride content, requiring high strength up to 400°F.
22Cr offers improved mechanical properties and increased resistance to the effects of CO2 , chlorides, pH, and temperatures when compared with Super 13 Chrome. The higher strength and temperature resistance, relative to Super 13 Chrome, allow it to be used in deeper wells with high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) conditions, as downhole tubular components, packers, and other subsurface equipment. All environmental factors, including H2S, CO2 , temperature, pH, and chloride concentration, should be considered before final material selection.
This alloy is classified in MR0175/ISO15156 as a duplex stainless steel having a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) ≤40 and is suitable for H2S partial pressure ≤0.3 psi.
Duplex 2205 is a nitrogen enhanced duplex stainless steel that was developed to combat common corrosion problems encountered with the 300 series stainless steels. “Duplex” describes a family of stainless steels that are neither fully austenitic, like 304 stainless, nor purely ferritic, like 430 stainless. The structure of 2205 duplex stainless steel consists of austenite pools surrounded by a continuous ferrite phase. In the annealed condition, 2205 contains approximately 40-50% ferrite. Often referred to as the work horse grade, 2205 is the most widely used grade in the duplex family of stainless steels.
The advantage of a duplex structure is that it combines the favorable qualities of a ferritic alloy (stress corrosion cracking resistance and high strength) with those of an austenitic alloy (ease of fabrication and corrosion resistance).
Usage of 2205 Duplex stainless steel should be limited to temperatures below 600° F. Extended elevated temperature exposure can embrittle 2205 stainless.

CORROSION RESISTANCE:
Due to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 demonstrates superior corrosion resistant properties to 316 and 316L in most environments
Chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content also provide high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions
Resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and temperatures of up to about 302°F (150°C)
The presence of ferrite provides for good performance of Duplex 2205 in caustic environments
General Corrosion
Because of its high chromium (22%), molybdenum (3%), and nitrogen (0.18%) contents, the corrosion resistance properties of 2205 duplex stainless steel plate are superior to that of 316L or 317L in most environments.
Localized Corrosion Resistance
The chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen in 2205 duplex stainless steel plate also provide excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion even in very oxidizing and acidic solutions.
